About our project!
Our goals are to clean up Peruque Creek at Ruge Park and to educate the community about the importance of keeping our local watershed clean and how to accomplish this”. Our goals are important because it will take the entire community working together to keep our watershed clean. This cannot happen if they do not understand why they need to keep our watershed clean is important or how to keep it clean.
In order to learn more about our watershed and what we can do to help, we signed up to become a Missouri Stream Team and asked them to come out and talk to us. During their visit we learned what a watershed is, how prairie streams are different from other stream, how to tell if a stream is contaminated and why dumping waste down storm drains is bad.
After we picked our environmental goal and learned all about it, we needed to come up with a action plan and timeline if we wanted to reach it. We had a lot of great ideas, but we did not have any way to pay for the things that we wanted to do. In order to come up with money for our projects we contacted Stream Team for some free supplies and we worked together with our teachers to write a service learning grant.
We did several things to help us reach our goal. We went into Peruque Creek at Ruge Park and picked up litter. We also stenciled “Dump No Waste, Drains to Stream” on local storm drains to remind people not to dump waste down drains. During both of these activities we passed out fliers that we made to teach people about watershed pollution issues.
In order to further educate our community members we planned several presentations, created a music video, wrote letters to the our local and state government agencies, sent information about our project to local newspapers and news channels and created this website.
Throughout this project we have learned a lot about streams, watersheds and working as team. We hope that you can learn as much as we have from this website and that you will pledge to help keep your watershed clean.
